Last thing on my mind

The last thing on my mind

Tom Paxton

. RA, Spanish 2005

It's a lesson too late for the learnin'
Made of sand, made of sand
In a moment of time my life is turnin'
In your hand, in your hand.

Are you goin' away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind?
Well I could have loved you better,
Didn't mean to be unkind
You know that was the last thing on my mind.

You've got reasons a-plenty for goin'
This I know, this I know
For our lives have been separately growing
Please don't go, please don't go.

As I lie in my bed in the mornin'
Without you, without you
Each song in my breast dies a-mourning
Without you, without you

From Tom Paxton.
One of my favourites - I used to sing it with my pupils.

This was quite a hit - for Dolly Parton, for Peter Paul and Mary and others, and on a small scale for Tom Paxton.
Thinking along the lines of folk repertoire I actually changed the song (to the words above) thinking I had improved it.  There were a couple of things I couldn't make myself sing.  And now my version has stuck (with me), and that's the one I sing
