—— folk family and jam

The water is wide

The water is wide I cannot get over
Neither have I wings that I could fly
But give me a boat that will carry two
And both shall row my love and I

Down in the meadow, the other day
A-gathering flowers so fine and gay
A-gatherin flowers so red and blue
I little thought what love could do

I leant my back against an oak
Thinking it was a trusty tree
But first it bended and then it broke
And so my love did lightly me

A ship there is that sails the sea
It's loaded deep as deep can be
But not so deep as this love I'm in
I know not if I sink or swim

From   Burl Ives perhaps - but I don't think so.  Pete Seeger perhaps?  Joan Baez.
Also called Waly waly (whatever that means).
